Mike Harlington (CTA) – Show welcome, Who and What are the CTA? and why are we here

MIKE HARLINGTON

-CANNABIS TRADES ASSOCIATION

ctaukmike-harlington-headshot-ctauk

Mike is the current Chairman of the CTA, he was placed into this role by the Founders of the Association and current Directors.  As an independent with no active role in the CBD marketplace this independence has ensured that the CTA has grown based on honest, open and clear dialogue with no ties to any producer with the Authorities.

Since its inception in 2016 the CTA is now the largest association of its type in the world, dwarfing many other associations with around 750 Members, 2500 Sellers and several Associates, including Law Firms, Lab Equipment Manufacturers, Merchant Services Providers and Insurance Providers.  All of whom not only give preferential rates to CTA Members, but many also only supply CTA Members, this way they ensure that only legal compliant sellers have access to their services.

The CTA is the ONLY association listed in official UK government documentation and is widely regarded by the FSA, Trading Standards and MHRA as the only industry association and point of contact for any legal issues surrounding CBD. Indeed, the CTA is in active discussion with many governments around Europe and is a registered stakeholder with the EFSA, SANTE and The Horizontal Working Party on Drugs (HDG), as well of course MHRA, FSA, NICE, DoH and Home Office.

Mike finds the current confusion and recent intervention by the FSA as the industries own doing, as he warned that this was likely to happen less than a week before EFSA intervened.  “Far too many Sellers of CBD Products simply make up their own variation of law and opinion without taking into account the actual laws surrounding the sale of these products”.

The CTA has built an enviable reputation and relationship with the UK government by working with those departments, choosing to work within reasonable rules and regulations instead of trying to challenge at all times.  By doing so the CTA has already influenced many departments and individuals and will continue to do so for the good of the industry.

Hannah Deacon – Medical cannabis on prescription -A patients view image
13:30 - 14:00
Hannah Deacon – Medical cannabis on prescription -A patients view

SEMINAR NOTES

Hannah Deacon is the mother of Alfie Dingley the first patient in the U.K. whose doctors received a schedule one license to prescribe him full extract cbd and thc. Hannah imported thc for the first time legally into the U.K. in July 2018 and Alfie received the first legal NHS prescription on 1st November 2018 when medical cannabis was rescheduled. She talks today about what it’s like to be a patient in the U.K. today and what the blockages are to access. She will also discuss what can be done to help move access forward.

HANNAH DEACON

Hannah Deacon is mother to Alfie and Annie and partner to Drew. She works closely with Prof Mike Barnes to raise awareness of medical cannabis and the issues patients face within the U.K, she is the Executive Director of the Medical Cannabis Clinicians Society and is also Head of Patient Access for Lyphe Group.

Alfie started having seizures at eight months old which progressively got worse with age. He is diagnosed with PCDH19. The only treatment which worked for Alfie was IV steroids. He was having up to 25 doses a month by the time he was 5 as his condition was getting progressively worse. IV Steriods are extremely dangerous to give long term. After researching alternative treatments for epilepsy, Hannah, along with her family, took Alfie to Holland in 2017 to be treated by a Paediatric Neurologist with medical cannabis as a last-ditch attempt to save his life.

The medicine worked, but they came home in February 2018, as money had run out but without knowing how to get him his medicine in the UK.

After a long fought four-month battle working alongside End Our Pain and the Government, Alfie’s doctor Professor Mike Barnes was issued the first permanent medical cannabis license in the UK on 19th June 2018. On this day the Home Secretary also announced the review into medical cannabis which helped lead to the law change. On 1st November 2018 the law was changed so full extract cannabis oil can be prescribed on the NHS by specialist clinicians. Alfie now has the first legal NHS prescription in the UK. The campaign which Hannah and End Our Pain ran, played a huge role in ensuring the law was changed and we are very proud of this.

Alfie remains extremely well thanks to securing his prescription and enjoys a full and happy life. Medical Cannabis is not a cure, but it is an amazing treatment for Alfie. My work is now to advocate for those that need medical cannabis on prescription. I support 18 families who are all desperate for help. There are many thousands more, I know what it is like to suffer with a very poorly child and I will do all I can to be the voice for these families and try to ensure they can access medical cannabis on prescription through the NHS.

Tamara McAsey (Cannafull Ltd) – The CBD Cosmetics market is booming – so why are the offerings so poor?

SEMINAR NOTES

Searches for CBD Skincare are up 397% for 2020.

We’re seeing the trend for CBD skincare reach shelves on the High Street. Many companies from luxury brands to Superdrug are offering cannabis-infused products. However, when you take the time to look at these products, you’ll find a number of concerns. We’ll split these into 2 categories: cosmetics companies doing CBD, and CBD companies doing cosmetics.

Cosmetic companies doing CBD

  • Products are produced quickly, with little thought into the therapeutic values of CBD. The idea is, if there’s a weed leaf on the packet, it’ll sell.

>> Turning the CBD cosmetics market into a gimmick, which it’s not!

  • Products contain low quality CBD extracts as cosmetics companies don’t know the difference between the hundreds of types of CBD available.
  • Little work is done in terms of marketing as to WHY CBD in skincare is effective.

CBD companies doing cosmetics

  • In our own trials of CBD Cosmetics readily available to buy online, 70% of products surveyed did not meet cosmetic regulation requirements.
  • Very little innovation, we see the same products over and over: balms, lip balms, hand creams
  • Little care is put into manufacturing procedures resulting in defective products on the market
  • Recent evidence of voluntary misinformation in regard to the quality and quantity of CBD in products.
  • The other ingredients in the formulation are often disregarded, and little care is put into cosmetic industry trends and customer desires. We see the same ethos as with cosmetics companies in that if it contains CBD, it’ll sell.
  • Again, little information available as to why topical application of CBD is effective. And it is!

How do we fix these problems and make sure that the CBD Cosmetics industry is one that continues to grow, and not fizzle out in a sea of gimmick products?

TAMARA MCASEY

Tamara has been working in the cosmetics industry since graduating from Université de Tours (France) in 2016. Working with one of the UK’s leading suppliers of cosmetic ingredients (Aromantic Ltd.), she learnt to decipher the code of cosmetic formulation and discovered the fascinating world of botanical extractions. She has worked closely with internationally renowned skincare specialist Kolbjorn Borseth on a number of skincare publications, focussing on the benefits of natural ingredients. Her experience developing and formulating cosmetic products, alongside her interest in the therapeutic values of CBD and other cannabis extracts, has lead her to her current position of Creative Director at Cannfull Ltd.

With the cannabis cosmetics industry in full boom, she’s hoping that her work will see an increase in the availability of high-quality cannabis cosmetics, with a focus on transparency and sustainably sourced natural ingredients.

Guy Coxall (Hemp Tank) – Is history repeating itself? Lies, corruption and greed could lead to the next prohibition.

SEMINAR NOTES

Cannabis is the most important plant we possess and now is the time we need it most; our survival depends on it.

Those with the powers to liberate this plant are making it virtually impossible. Novel foods, THC levels, safety concerns and licencing issues all point to one conclusion; the system is corrupt.

GUY COXALL

Guy Coxall needs little introduction when it comes to the legal cannabis/hemp industry. One of the seven Founder Members of the Cannabis Trades Association and previously the CTA Compliance Director, he has now moved to work for TrustCanna, the new certification mark for the industry.

Guy is also the Chairman of HempTank, the UK’s think tank for hemp education and policy development. Guy’s passion lies in re-establishing the hemp industry in the UK and supporting the development of emerging technologies which can support the health of our society, economy and the environment.

Brenda Gordon – Hemp, The Super Fibre For Sustainable Fashion

SEMINAR NOTES

Coming Soon!

BRENDA GORDON

My professional fashion career began in the late eighties. But I could say that I’ve been inspired by fashion for my entire life.

From my humble beginnings as a pattern cutter and grader for a Birmingham fashion design house, to working for many leading clothing suppliers and retail brands both domestic and abroad. Mainly as a designer, technical designer and garment technical manager.

I’ve lived and worked abroad for some of these years, destinations including Bangladesh, Vietnam and China. Being able to witness first-hand the ethical side of the industry and to be hands on in the mass production of clothing was invaluable experience. This has guided my thought process and strategy for my current work.

Most recently I’ve started my own sourcing business Monoshe Ltd. Through this I focus on being as sustainable as possible and to promote low volume fashion values as much as possible.

I am now an experienced fashion sourcing specialist, supporting fashion buyers and designers with strong corporate social and ethical responsibilities, as well as sustainable fashion values to prove and uphold.

Within my personal and business network, I only work with fully ethically compliant suppliers and production partners.
This ensures that the buying and production process is completely safe and transparent from start to finish.

In order to manage and prove social & environmental impact concerns and to establish compliance to regular audits with full result reporting with recommendations, I operate a strict, checkable, independent certification and registration process.

This effort includes the sourcing and use of the most eco-friendly and sustainable fabrics. Of which Hemp is just one of the great options available. I also work with organic cotton and natural fibres as well as repurposed or recycled materials, vegan leathers as much as possible.

Oliver Zugel (Foliumed) – Will European medical cannabis shift from flower to extracts?

SEMINAR NOTES

Patients and doctors today are faced with little choice beyond flower when prescribing medical cannabis. But flowers have a short shelf life, are difficult to dose, and achieving batch-to-batch consistency is a major challenge for licenced producers. Add to that the potential toxicity of inhaling combusted plant material, and the question becomes: why do flowers remain the main administration method in established medical cannabis markets like Germany, Canada or the USA?  And how come well tried and tested administration methods like extracts, sprays, tablets, capsules  or sublingual forms haven’t made a broader inroad in the market as of yet?  This keynote will try to answer these questions and look at how medical cannabis will be used in the future.

Oliver Zugel

Oliver Zugel is the founder and CEO of FoliuMed, a producer of pharma-grade ingredients and extracts for the European health & wellness markets. FoliuMed grows medicinal cannabis under ideal climatic conditions in Colombia which then gets purified and processed in a GMP certified pharma facility. This allows FoliuMed to offer safe, EU-compliant input materials for CBD manufacturers at highly competitive rates.

Mr. Zugel is a serial cannabis entrepreneur who operates medical and adult-use businesses in Europe, the USA and Latinamerica. His multi-jurisdictional experience, strategic insight and prior leadership roles in highly regulated industries have made him a sought after speaker on the international cannabis conference circuit. He holds a First Class Degree from the London School of Economics where he studied as a King Edward VII scholar and is a former partner of Harvard Strategy Guru Michael Porter.

Presenter: Douglas Berg, PJLA Testing Program Manager

As of January 1, 2020, there are 11 States where recreational marijuana is legal for adults over the age of 21.  It is legal for medical use in 33 states.  In all states products and their use are legal for non-psychoactive cannabis extracts in a variety of forms including food, confections, supplements, topical ointments and creams, cosmetics, and more.  With this has grown an acknowledgement by state and local governments that these products need to be closely and appropriately  monitored and even regulated for the health and safety of the users like other, similar consumables.   Many states require product testing   and have acknowledged the recognized and  reliable the ISO/IEC 17025 “General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories” as the basis for their testing requirements with some requiring formal accreditation by recognized accreditation bodies.  PJLA, an ILAC MRA signatory,  has accredited over 50 cannabis testing laboratories.  These laboratories  have been new entities or established with personnel experienced in regulatory science in food, beverage, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, and environmental  fields.   They have the equipment, instrumentation, standards and methods to test not just for the identification and quantification of cannabinoids, but also the terpenes, metals, pesticides, herbicides, extraction solvents, and biologics such as mycotoxins, aflatoxins, yeast, mold, and other substances.   Accreditation involves the assessment of these laboratories for their  technical competence having trained, qualified personnel to  perform validated methods using the appropriate equipment, traceable standards and reference materials, with appropriate controls and analytical quality control, and performance in meaningful comparisons with other laboratories. This presentation will give an overview of the process, typical accreditation scopes, and overview of instrumentation and methods, traceability and reliability of results, and issues confronting these laboratories in the current regulatory and commercial environment such as testing for Vitamin E Acetate in vaping products.

Science , art and paperwork it all comes together to build the unique product you use and love every day. But how did you come to find it , a lot goes into making a product. And even more goes into making a product properly. Every stage needs to be cared for. We have chosen what we believe to 3 most inportant aspects to a products validity. And this discussion will explain why. We are hoping for an interactive seminar with question from the audience so we can educate and inform on these crucial stages. Hopefully enabling consumers to be more educated and informed when making decisions. Or directing those looking to follow in our footsteps. Hannah Wenn & Nicole Gore (Hannabis) – Small business success: Meet Hannabis

HANNAH WENN

Originally getting involved with the CBD industry in January 2018, partnering with mulitple companies over 18 months trying to find the right one for her, she decided that if she wanted something done right then she should just do it herself! Hannah is the social media & CBD guru! What she doesn’t know she’ll learn, find out and master. She is an original thinker, with the ability to add, develop and even create and trial her own ideas as well as being equipped with the knowledge of tatics that have stood the test of time! She is committed, hard grafting and an all round fire of happiness. She will keep you motivated and will support you through anything and everything in the real and social media world! Hannah is a free spirited, hippie mum of 2 littlens who also smashes her own business that she runs from home. She is committed and dedicated, she says she’ll love a day off but as soon as the business is done and the kids are in bed she misses the madness; which is usually when the new ideas and plans get going! Hannah has the determination to make something from nothing, growing up all she was told was she wouldn’t amount to anything by teachers or that her life choices and opinions were wrong by family. She was a black sheep who now brings so much colour into the lives of the family she created and the friends that she stands by. A friend for life and a business partner you’d wish you had, there is no stopping Hannah and her infectious passion to make the world a better place for all!

NICOLE GORE

Nicole is nothing less of an absolute inspiration. In 2009 Nicole lost her job after struggling with a chronic condition, she had no support or understanding from her employer despite the hard work and effort she always gave. It meant packing up the life she built moving across country so she could have the help and support she needed but gave up life as she knew it. One day she decided, enough is enough! Nicole wanted her life back, but her condition still created obstacles most people won’t understand. Inspite of this Nicole has set up her own branding company, all run from home and created and built by her. Something that was a little side hobby keeping her mind busy has developed and grown into something huge, with clients from all walks of life, including large companies, coming to Nicole for her expertise and professional touch.Along side her branding business Nicole also got herself involved with network marketing, where she worked along side Hannah in the previous CBD companies. Which then resulted in becoming a director for Hannabis – CBD Movement LTD & turning her own brand, We.CAN,nabidiol into an educational platform where people could turn to learn about the cannabis industry as a whole. Nicole has incredible vision for growth, with amazing ideas to go with that vision. She may be the director that ends up being more behind the scenes but she is always making big moves to make sure Hannabis moves forwards. Nicole is wholly family orientated, which includes the four legged love of her fur babies as well as her two wild child littlens. Everything she does is to make a better world for the people she cares and loves.
